- Note : This is the manual for the Standalone
- Application version of ProjectX. Depending on
- the platform, the plugin is called
- ProjectXPlugInPPC, ProjectXPlugIn68K or
- npProjX.dll. The standalone application is
- called Project X.
-
- Fly through the Internet
- Using your mouse & keyboard, you can fly
- through a 3D representation of the Internet.
- This technology prototype will allow you to
- move forward, backward and laterally within the
- Project X window. (We call the contents of the
- window the X space.)
-
- * To fly forward, or "into" the space, hold
- down the mouse button.
- * To fly backward, or out of the space, hold
- down the command key and the mouse button.
- * To accelerate your movement through the
- space, add the shift key.
- * To 'steer,' put the mouse on the black
- background, hold the mouse button down and
- move the mouse toward where you want to
- go.
- * To 'jump' to a node, double click on it.
- If it is a document node, the correct app
- will launch the document. If you double
- click on a folder node, you will jump to
- that folder.
-
- Windows
-
- * Use the grow box in the right hand side
- corner of the window to increase or
- decrease the size of the windows.
- * Open up multiple XSpace windows. To open a
- new window, select a node by clicking once
- on it and then choose the "Display in New
- Window" option under the Node menu.
-
- The Icons
-
- * Nodes with a page icon are documents.
- Double clicking on them will show you the
- content.
- * Nodes with a trident like icon have
- multiple parents. You can select them by
- clicking once on them and ask to see the
- other parents (command-P).
- * You can double click on nodes with a
- triangle icon in the upper left corner and
- the system will contact the appropriate
- server and expand the space. What is read
- in will be permanently part of your X
- Space (unless of course, you explicitly
- delete it).
-
- Customize the X space
- By using Apple's drag & drop, you can add,
- delete or move stuff within the X space.
-
- * To add web (HTML, FTP, News, Email)
- content to the space, drag & drop links
- from Netscape (support for other browsers
- coming real soon.)
- * To add gopher hierarchies to the space,
- drag & drop the gopher link or use the
- Add... command. The gopher structure will
- be automatically mapped into the space.
- * To add desktop content to the space, drag
- & drop it.
- * Try adding a desktop folder. (It will take
- a second or two to index the contents.) If
- your hard drive is below 1.0GB, you may
- want to try dragging it into the window.
- (If your hard drive is greater than 1.0GB,
- you may have to wait for a few minutes.)
- * To delete a node, simply drag it into the
- trash.
-
- Personalize the X space
- To personalize the X space, you can:
-
- * change the number of nodes displayed
- * change the number of levels displayed
- * change the color or an individual node or
- a node level
- * display topic nodes as ovals or rectangles
-
- Use the Finder view
- You may want to view your X space hierarchy in
- the more traditional Finder interface. This
- view is especially relevant for very dense
- portions of the space.
-
- Miscellaneous
- * Perform a Search : Use the Find command to
- search for nodes with the given string in their
- title. You can search around the place where
- you are or you can search globally. Try out the
- option of saving the search results in a new
- window.
- * You can select a node by clicking once on it.
- The selected node and its children turn into a
- dark and light grey color respectively. The
- menu options under Node become active when
- there is a selected node. You can also change a
- nodes title when it is selected and the cursor
- is an I-beam.
- * Open up a subhierarchy in a new window. Once
- you have done this, you can change the
- structure of the hierarchy. You do this by
- dragging and dropping the nodes from one window
- into another. If you want a certain node (or
- sub-hierarchy) to appear in multiple places,
- hold down the option key when you are
- performing the drag. After you have done this,
- you should see a little trident icon next to
- the node you just moved. This indicates that
- the node has multiple parents.
-
- Take a tour of the menus
- Using our menu tour, quickly learn about the
- program's capabilities and how to take
- advantage of them.
